I have always been moved by photographs from the late 1800's and early 20th century of aboriginal men in chains, aware that many of them were freedom fighters, fighting for their land and people. I would have done the same.

The 26th of May is Sorry Day, a national day in Australia acknowledging the mistreatment of the nations indigenous people since the European invasion and settlement. We have a black history that needs to be remembered

Manganinnie

Acrylic on canvas 24"x24" (60.9cm x 60.9cm)

 $600-

Manganinnie is the central character of a novel written by Beth Roberts. The storyline, A Tasmanian aboriginal woman whose family was recently killed by European settlers and British colonial forces, finds a young white girl lost in the bush. Together they search for their home and their people.

With this portrait I have sought to capture the sadness, the beauty and dignity of this character.

The movie, based on the book, starred Mawuyal Yanthalawwuy.

Into The Music is a portrait of my son Caleb, painted after a trip together through Central Australia.  One night we camped in the desert. No fire. No lights. Nobody else around. Beneath an unbelievably clear, star filled sky we swapped  songs and made some music.
